It has been said that most of the problems that exist in our world today could have either been totally avoided or drastically reduced if people only educate themselves on the issues. Unfortunately, this lack of “self education” is not always as a result of a person’s inaccessibility to the right resources, but in most cases by their inability to read and write.
Women’s education in India plays a very important role in the overall development of the country. It not only helps in the development of half of the human resources but in improving the quality of life at home and outside. Educated women not only tend to promote the education of their girl children but also can provide better guidance to all their children. Moreover educated women can also help in the reduction of the infant mortality rate and the growth of the population.
Prayas runs Literacy centers in the Old City of Hyderabad. The interaction between the economic structure and its conservative culture, in which traditional gender roles are strongly enforced, is largely responsible. Men in the region are more likely to have direct access to wage employment and control over wealth, while women are largely economically dependent upon male family members.
